Spotlight Series: Athletes of ASN, Volume 3
Today, as part of our Athletes of ASN series, we are excited to highlight an all-around athlete and ASN’s awesome softball teams.
Dennis Stewart is a multi-sport athlete. He competes in softball, basketball, bowling, and track and field. Dennis loves being a part of a team strives to be able to help other people with disabilities in any way he can. Dennis has been a competitive athlete for approximately 10 years, and in that time, he has not only improved as an athlete, but he’s also become a leader in all of the sports he participates in. He constantly looks for ways to encourage others and has a long-term of being a head coach so he can continue to guide and support other athletes.
ASN Starfish Stars won the 2016 Special Olympics Division 1 state softball tournament located in Cabot, AR. ASN went undefeated in the single elimination tournament. Coach Alana Lawhorn said “I am very proud of our partners and athletes. Everyone played exceptionally well and conducted themselves in a positive manner. We look forward to doing it again next year.”
ASN Starfish Stars won the Area 3 Unified Softball tournament in the competitive league. The team coached by Alana Lawhorn went 10-1 to finish off the season and went undefeated in the tournament. The Starfish Stars had some amazing hits from athletes Austin Hanna, Derek Ewing, and Joe Elliot. The Starfish Stars took back the trophy from the ASN All-stars who took 2nd place in the tournament.
For the second year in a row the ASN Shooting Stars went on to win the 2016 Springdale Youth Center Unified non-competitive Softball Tournament. The Shooting Stars team coached by Keith Mosby went undefeated 4-0 in tournament play. ASN had some amazing defensive stops by Dennis Stewart, Ben Pearson, and Darren Boyd.
All teams showed great athleticism and even better sportsmanship. It was a great year and we are proud to have so many outstanding participants in softball this year.
